Use of dry-matter intake recorded at multiple time periods during lactation increases the accuracy of genomic prediction for dry-matter intake and residual feed intake in dairy cattle

چکیده

Context Feed is the largest expense on a dairy farm, therefore improving feed efficiency important. Recording dry-matter intake (DMI) prerequisite for calculating efficiency. Genetic variation of and varies across lactation stages parities. DMI an expensive difficult-to-measure trait. This raises question which time periods during would be most appropriate to measure DMI. Aims The aim was evaluate whether sequence variants selected from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) recorded at multiple parities increase accuracy genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) residual (RFI). Methods Data 2274 overseas lactating cows were used GWAS select variants. performed using average phenotypes in 30-day window six different lactation. significant each period either first or later GEBVs RFI Australian BayesRC with 50 k single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) Key results There differences correlations heritabilities between within parity periods. Conclusions Our showed that late could capture more genetic prediction through use custom genotype panels selection. Implications Collecting optimal period(s) may help develop accurate cost-effective cattle.

Prediction of Dry Matter Intake by Cattle in Feedlot

Dry matter intake (DMI) is the most important variable affecting animal performance (Waldo and Jorgensen, 1981). This is especially the case for beef cattle, considering their economic importance, their complex digestive systems and their particular metabolic functions (Forbes, 2007). Feed intake restrictions can prevent the fulfillment of nutritional requirements. As most of the nutrients in b...

1 Dry Matter Intake

Dry matter intake (DMI) is fundamentally important in nutrition because it establishes the amount of nutrients available to an animal for health and production. Actual or accurately estimated DMI is important for the formulation of diets to prevent underfeeding or overfeeding of nutrients and to promote efficient nutrient use. Underfeeding of nutrients restricts production and can affect the he...

Impact of cow size on dry matter intake, residual feed intake, metabolic response, and cow performance.

Thirty-eight Angus-cross beef cows were used to evaluate differences in DMI, residual feed intake (RFI), and endocrine markers on the basis of cow size and RFI ranking during 2 stages of production. Cows housed in individual pens (2.2 × 9.1 m) were fed, over a 70-d feeding period, 30% Bermuda grass hay and 70% ryegrass baleage diet during lactation (LACT) and a 100% ryegrass hay diet during pos...

Relationships of feeding behaviors with average daily gain, dry matter intake, and residual feed intake in Red Angus-sired cattle.

Feeding behavior has the potential to enhance prediction of feed intake and to improve understanding of the relationships between behavior, DMI, ADG, and residual feed intake (RFI) in beef cattle. Two cohorts, born in 2009 and 2010, the progeny of Red Angus bulls (n = 58 heifers and n = 53 steers), were evaluated during the growing phase, and the latter group of steers was also evaluated during...

Prediction of dry matter intake throughout lactation in a dynamic model of dairy cow performance.

In the dynamic modeling of dairy cow performance over a full lactation, the difference between net energy intake and net energy used for maintenance, growth, and output in milk accumulates in body reserves. A simple dynamic model of net energy balance was constructed to select, out of some common dry matter intake (DMI) prediction equations, the one that resulted in a minimum cumulative bias in...
